The New Home Essentials Checklist: What to Buy Before Moving Day

The New Home Essentials Checklist: What to Buy Before Moving Day

The first night in a new home is not the time to discover you forgot towels.

You do not need to furnish the entire house before you move in. But a few essentials will make the first days much easier.

Think of this as the “please let tomorrow morning be civilized” list.

Bedroom

Have the basics ready before moving day:

·       Sheets

·       Pillows

·       Mattress protection

·       Comforter, duvet or blanket

·       A second set of sheets if possible

·       A bedside lamp if the room does not have adequate lighting

Your bedroom does not need to be finished. It needs to be comfortable.

Bath

Prioritize:

·       Bath towels

·       Hand towels

·       Washcloths

·       Bath mat

·       Shower curtain and liner where needed

·       Basic bath accessories

·       Hamper or laundry solution

You can live without decorative soap dispensers for a few days. Towels are another story.

Kitchen

Start with what you actually use.

That usually means basic cookware, utensils, dinnerware, glasses, mugs and the tools you rely on every day.

Do not buy every specialty gadget before you know how you will use the kitchen. The avocado slicer can wait.

Cleaning and Organization

Have a basic cleaning setup ready from the beginning.

Add trash and recycling solutions, laundry basics and simple storage for the things that otherwise end up sitting on counters.

Moving boxes are not a long-term storage strategy. They are just very confident cardboard.

Privacy and Light

Check the windows before move-in.

Some rooms may need window treatments immediately for privacy or light control.

Measure before ordering whenever possible.

What Can Wait

You can wait on:

·       Artwork

·       Decorative accessories

·       Accent pieces

·       Extra entertaining pieces

·       Furniture for spaces you are not using yet

·       Decorative storage that does not solve an immediate problem

Give yourself time to understand the house.

The Bottom Line

The goal for move-in day is not a finished home.

It is a functional home.

Make the bedroom comfortable. Make the bath work. Make the kitchen usable. Solve privacy and storage needs.

Then take your time with everything else.
